A Little Creepy…

by Matt on December 31, 2010

It is a little creepy here at work all by myself…

I’ve actually heard that the aquatics center is haunted. Apparently, the showers “mysteriously” turn on late at night ;)

Work2

The pool is completely closed this afternoon, so my job is to sit here and make sure that no one comes in.

Doesn’t that sound like fun?

Work

I was kind of bored, so I started taking pictures of myself…

Work3

That is what you do when no one else around ;)

I was actually pretty productive at work this afternoon! Instead of wasting time by watching movies and surfing the internet, I got a lot of things done that I have been putting off for awhile now.

  • I updated my resume
  • I updated my blog pages
  • I completely revamped my budget (on )

I had a pretty long “to-do” list this week, but I now have everything marked off, with the exception of cleaning my car. It is such a pigsty that I need to devote an entire afternoon to that task…

Since this is a running blog, let’s rewind a little bit to this morning. In other words, let’s talk about running!

My Last Workout Of 2010

Running: 8.13 miles (7:51 pace)

Cycling: 30 minutes on my trainer

Core Work:

  • Plank: 3 sets of 60 seconds
  • Side plank: 3 sets of 60 seconds each
  • Bicycle crunches: 3 sets of 60 seconds
  • Stability ball crunches: 3 sets of 20
  • Medicine ball crunches: 3 sets of 20
  • Lower back extension on stability ball: 3 sets of 20

With plenty of time this morning, I wanted to make sure that I ended 2010 with a decent workout.

I didn’t mention this on my 2011 goals post, but I want to start getting back into doing core work next year (I consider this to be in the “train smarter” section). I used to work my core AT LEAST 5 days a week, but towards the end of the year, I started getting really lazy with it.

Maybe that is one the reasons I got injured?

It is definitely possibly that the two are interrelated, which is one of the reasons I want to start doing more core work.

As a runner, having a strong core is essential. Basically, your core supports every other muscle in your body. Without a strong core, your form and stride can become weak during the later stages of a run. When your form breaks down, you are have a higher possibility of getting injured.

Do you do core work? How often? Can you recommend any good exercises?

What are your plans for New Years tonight?

I have to work at 6 AM tomorrow, but I am still hanging out with some friends. Oh man I am already dreading tomorrow…

Core work is very critical IMHO. Looks like you have a good handle on the required maneuvers. You might want to throw in a kettlebell () and do some cable cross unders just to mix it up. The best thing about core is there are hundreds of different moves you can to.

T Pushups with a5 – 10 lb dumbbells and one handed or one footed push ups are also excellent for the core. If you can do both one and and one foot at the same time even better. Plus it’s bad ass!

Nice workout today Matt -Good way to end the year physically and mental. Happy New Year!

6am tomorrow?? What a bummer!
I do core work about 4x a wk but I need to do more. I prefer to do lots of my work traditionally. Old school is my preference. :)

You are SO right about the correlation with core work. LOL at the pictures – does your hair naturally fall that way or do you spend “time on it”? ;)

Happy New Year!
